Chantix & Zyban Drinking Study

Do you sometimes drink alcohol?
Are you over the age of 21? You may be eligible for the following study.

This study is looking at the effects of smoking cessation medications on your drinking behavior.

We are looking for people who smoke cigarettes and those who don’t. You can earn up to $729 for your participation in this study. (Yale HIC#0702002391).

We are looking at the effects of Chantix and Zyban on your drinking behavior. These medications are FDA-approved smoking cessation medications. There are two phases to the study. The first phase is called the screening phase, which is broken up into two appointments. Initially, you come in for an hour and a half in order to determine your eligibility for the study. During this time, you will be asked questions about your smoking and health history. You will receive $20 cash for this appointment.

If you are eligible based on this appointment, you will be scheduled for a physical exam (about an hour of your time) for which you will receive another $20 cash. If you are eligible based on both of these appointments, you will be scheduled for the second phase of the study which consists of a 1 week medication period during which you will attend two brief (about 30 min) visits, each on a separate day. You will be randomly assigned to take Chantix, Zyban or a placebo (which is a sugar pill).

You will then come in for one lab session. The lab session starts at 8 am and ends around 10 pm. You will participate in what we call an alcohol self-serve. This is a three hour process where, initially, you will drink one mixed drink of alcohol of your preference. Over the next two hours, you will be offered eight other drinks and it is up to you how many you drink. When you are not doing anything for the study, you can relax, watch television, watch movies, read, or work on something you bring in (homework, crossword puzzles, hobby, etc.). You will be discharged at 10 pm.

You will then continue on the study medication for 4 weeks attending 1 brief outpatient visit a week.
You can earn up to $729 if you complete this study.
